Alwar is one of the oldest kingdoms in Rajasthan.
A mythological belief persists that this region was known as Matsya Desh where the Pandavas spent their 13th year of exile. It was founded in 1049 by Maharaja Alaghraj and was a part of Virat Nagar in 1500 BC. Later, Alwar was ruled by several Rajput lineages - Nikumbh Rajputs, Yaduvanshi Rajputs, Badgujar Rajputs and Naruka. Even the Marathas and Jats of Bharatpur have ruled the region, though for a very short period. Foundation of modern Alwar was laid down by Rao Partap Singh, a brave Rajput soldier who conquered the Alwar Fort. On March 1948, the state merged with three princely states - Bharatpur, Dholpur, and Karauli, and formed the Matsya Union. Like other popular travel destinations in Rajasthan, Alwar is also famous for its historical landmarks, which are popular sightseeing places of the region too.
